UConn ousted in semis

By JERRY TRECKER

The University of Connecticut men’s soccer season ended in dramatic fashion Friday night when the Huskies were denied an apparent equalizing goal in the final minute of their American Athletic Conference tournament semifinal in Dallas.

Yoni Sorokin’s 73rd minute tally wound up giving Central Florida (8-5-2) a 1-0 victory and a place in Sunday’s championship game against either host SMU or Temple. The Israeli freshman started and finished the attack as he slipped between two defenders to score from inside the box.

UConn (8-8-2) thought that Abdou Mbacke Thiam had scored on an 18-yard free kick in the final minute, but the referee waved play on.

Television replays suggested that the ball, which came down off the underside of the crossbar, had completely crossed the line.
