MANSFIELD ‚ÄĒ Democrat Paul Shapiro is locked into another term as mayor of Mansfield.
Shapiro was unanimously appointed Monday evening at the first town council meeting following the election.
Democrat Toni Moran was unanimously appointed as the deputy mayor to serve in Shapiro’s absence as chairperson of the council.
‚ÄúThere is a political adage that you never tell people that you are not planning to run again, because that immediately makes you a ‚Äėlame duck,‚Äô‚ÄĚ Shapiro said at Monday‚Äôs meeting. ‚ÄúI am not going to run again, this will be my final term on the Mansfield Town Council.
‚ÄúI look forward to having a good two years with every single one of you,‚ÄĚ Shapiro added. ‚ÄúI feel our four newcomers are all going to make terrific contributions.‚ÄĚ
Republicans David Freudmann and Charles Ausberger, Democrat Terry Berthelot and unaffiliated Caitlin Briody are the new members of the council, although Freudmann served previously from 2012-13.
Moran fills the seat of Democrat Bill Ryan.
Moran previously served as the deputy mayor for about one-and-a-half terms and filled the role of state Rep. Gregg Haddad, D-Mansfield, who was previously Mansfield’s deputy mayor before his election to the General Assembly in 2010.
The mayor and deputy mayor are usually appointed based on the votes received. Shapiro earned 1,943 votes while Moran earned 1,877.
